Fall Foliage Tour 2009

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Plans for FFT2009 are listed below.  Lancaster County PA offers quite a mix of sights to see!  County roads, shopping, Amish (PA Dutch) lifestyle, & railroad museums.  A very scenic region of PA with many covered bridges, Lancaster County is usually in full foliage cover during late October.  The event should be very scenic & colorful. 

Lancaster is rich in American History such as being the home to the only US President (15th) from Pennsylvania, James Buchanan & also Radical Republican Thaddeus Stevens.  Historical innovations from Lancaster that are also of significance:

  • Fraktur, the artistic and elaborate 18th century and 19th century hand-illuminated folk art inspired by German blackface type, originated at Johann Conrad Beissel's cloister of German 7th-day Baptists in Ephrata.
  • The first battery-powered watch, the Hamilton Electric 500, was released in 1957 by the Hamilton Watch Company.
  • The Pennsylvania Long Rifle, sometimes mistakenly called the Kentucky Long Rifle.
  • The Conestoga wagon, which started the practice of driving right-of-center.
  • The Stogie cigar. The word Stogie is a shortened form of Conestoga. The Amish quilt, a highly utilitarian art form, dates to 1849 in Lancaster County.

BEWARE THE BUGGIES!

This is a serious warning!  Amish buggies are very prevalent in this area.  Be aware that there may be one just over the next blind hill or turn.  Make sure when passing them that you make sure you do so with care & caution.  Find a place to pull over or have a passenger to take any pictures.

Early-Bird Arrivals can just kick back & take it easy.  Those arriving very early can shop at the Rockvale Outlet Stores or visit local attractions.  We plan to grab dinner at a local restaurant.  There are also local Ghost Tours that may be of interest & dependent on group size.

 

Lapps Family Restaurant Deli & Bakery [2270 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, PA]

  • Popular locally-owned restaurant

  • Meet for casual/simple dinner at 6:30PM

Strasburg Ghost Tours [2 W. Main Street, Strasburg, PA, 17579]

  • In the spirit of Halloween, a Ghost tour is planned for the evening for those that are interested

  • Fee may apply, DMA officers need to look at funds to see if partial/full compnsation is possible.

  • Tour #1 8:00PM, 14 people max, FILLED

    • As the rooster crows early morn, the Green Dragon comes alive every Friday morning in the little country town of Ephrata in Lancaster County. Thousands of local shoppers have visited this local attraction since 1932 for their weekly shopping from over 400 local growers, merchants and craftsmen. With a long and unique history, the market continues to grow as a family owned business years later.

    • FREE tour of the famous motorcycle company

Saturday is the main event.  We'll all assemble with donuts & coffee available while members talk amongst themselves.  Take some time to relax, see old friends, meet new ones, or talk to the locals who will surely stop to see the DeLoreans.  The tour will feature 1-2 stops & will be followed by an all-you-can-eat PA Dutch dinner.

Driving Tour

  • Assemble Group: 9:00AM-11:00AM @ the Sleep Inn Hotel

  • SPECIAL GUEST (Weather Dependent): Curtis C. from Gap, Lancaster County owns 1 of the actual 1947 Ford Convertibles used in BTTF I.  He will be available with his car prior to the tour to show off his beautiful car & talk to DMA members

  • Driving Tour Start Time: 11:00 AM

  • Goodie Bags to be provided to DMA members

  • Lunch to be arranged before or just after start of driving tour

Sunday will be the time to say goodbyes & catch any local attractions.  Some recommended places of interest are listed below.  It is intended to be a free day to explore the area on your own or in self-assembled small groups before heading home.

      • Stop by for pictures of the steam engines & train cars

      • Take a ride on the Strasburg RR in your selection of car from coach, to cheese/wine car, or even the president car [fee applies]

      • Sunday hours: ticket window opens @ 10AM, trains depart @ 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, & 3:00

    • Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania [located across from the Strasburg Railroad]

      • Browse the large museum housing featuring many restored steam & diesel locomotives & other train cars

      • If shopping is your thing, the nearby outlet center features over 100 stores
